Do a home energy walkthrough before buying an upgrade
Start with bills, comfort patterns, and air leaks so the next energy purchase solves a real problem.

A high utility bill does not say which part of a house needs attention. Weather, rate design, occupancy, equipment settings, air leakage, insulation, and a single aging appliance can all influence it. A short walkthrough gives the household a better question than ‘what should we buy?’
This is a planning exercise, not a substitute for a professional energy assessment. Never enter an unsafe attic or crawlspace, disturb insulation of unknown age, or work on electrical, combustion, or refrigerant equipment.
The short answer
The best first energy upgrade is rarely a universal product; it follows a documented comfort, usage, and maintenance problem.
Gather a year of bills
Collect electric, gas, fuel, and water records as applicable. Note billing period length, usage units, rate changes, and unusual weather or occupancy before comparing the highest month.
Walk the home in daylight
Check accessible windows, doors, attic hatches, ducts, registers, and exterior penetrations. Look for missing caulk, damaged seals, disconnected vents, and signs of water—not a reason to add material blindly.
Record equipment details
Photograph model labels, thermostat settings, filter size, and installation dates if known. Record repair history and manufacturer recommendations before assuming equipment is inefficient.
Prioritize the lowest-risk fix
Address a confirmed maintenance or air-leak issue before a large purchase when appropriate. Get a professional assessment for insulation, duct, combustion, electrical, or equipment changes.
Measure after the change
Keep the pre-project photos, bills, invoices, and comfort notes. Compare a similar season after work is complete rather than claiming savings from one month.
Turn observations into a project brief
Before requesting quotes, write a one-page problem statement: the room, season, symptom, supporting bill or photo, maintenance already completed, and the result you want to verify. This keeps a salesperson’s preferred product from becoming the diagnosis.
- Comfort problem
- Specify when and where it happens: for example, an upstairs room remains warm after sunset while doors and registers are open. Do not call a room ‘inefficient’ without a condition to observe.
- Usage problem
- Separate higher consumption from a higher rate, longer billing cycle, unusual weather, or a change in occupants. Keep the actual usage units and billing dates with the total charge.
- First scope
- Ask an assessor or contractor to address the documented cause and explain the measurement or inspection behind the recommendation. Compare equivalent scopes rather than comparing a generic insulation quote with a new-equipment quote.
- After-work check
- Choose a comparison period before work begins, then save invoices, settings, photos, and comfort notes. Seasonal bills are evidence only when the conditions are reasonably comparable.

- Check maintenance

- Verify incentives
- Utility and tax incentives have specific eligibility and timing. Confirm them with the program administrator before using a promised credit in a project budget.
