Make a practical ventilation map before buying another air-quality product
Map where moisture, cooking fumes, dust, and outdoor air enter the house so ventilation decisions solve the right problem.

Indoor-air questions become expensive when every symptom is treated as a reason to buy the same product. Cooking, bathing, pets, cleaning products, outdoor smoke, combustion equipment, and damp materials create different problems and require different controls.
A ventilation map is a homeowner record, not a diagnostic test. Work from visible equipment and ordinary household routines. Stop and seek qualified help for combustion concerns, damaged wiring, suspected contamination, or a persistent health issue.
The short answer
Start with sources and paths: where pollutants or moisture begin, where exhaust actually ends, and which rooms trap conditions. A device is useful only after that map clarifies its job.
Sketch rooms and everyday sources
Draw a simple floor plan and mark kitchens, baths, laundry, attached-garage doors, fuel-burning equipment, and rooms where people spend long stretches. Add the time of day each source is active so the map describes the house as it is used.
Trace local exhaust safely
Turn on kitchen and bath fans, note control settings, and locate accessible exterior caps from the ground. Record a fan that is noisy, ineffective, or associated with condensation; do not open housings, enter an attic, or work around wiring to inspect it.
Separate filtration from ventilation
A central filter and portable air cleaner may reduce certain particles; they do not replace outdoor exhaust for cooking moisture or bathroom humidity. Record the equipment model and manual before changing filter ratings or settings.
Use observation windows
For one week, log showers, cooking, laundry, weather, open-window periods, and symptoms. Compare similar routines. This lets you see whether a condition follows a source, a room, or an outdoor event.
Choose one targeted correction
Examples include using a functioning range hood while cooking, cleaning a permitted fan grille, repairing a plumbing leak, or having a duct evaluated. Do not add fragrance, seal a vent, or use an unverified device to conceal a moisture or combustion problem.
Create an escalation packet
Keep your sketch, equipment labels, short log, and photos for a ventilation or HVAC professional. Mention CO alarms, soot, visible mold, repeated condensation, or symptoms that worsen at home. Those facts help determine whether the next step is source control, exhaust, filtration, repair, or health advice.

Field notes
- Mark sources
- List cooking, showering, laundry, attached-garage entry, pets, smoking, hobby work, and any fuel-burning appliance. Note timing instead of assuming a smell has one cause.
- Mark exits
- Identify kitchen and bathroom exhaust, dryer exhaust, operable windows, and outdoor terminations from safe ground level. Exhaust that ends inside a building is not an outdoor exit.
- Mark symptoms
- Note condensation, recurring odor, visible dust, soot, or a room that feels stagnant by time and weather. A single event is not a pattern.
- Protect occupants
- Follow medical advice for health symptoms, maintain carbon-monoxide alarms, and do not use ozone-generating devices in occupied spaces.
