Ceiling fan wobbling? Stop first, then inspect from the floor
A dusty blade can create imbalance, but sudden or forceful movement can also point to a damaged blade, loose assembly, mounting problem, or recalled product. Keep the fan off until the visible clues are sorted.

Do not stand under a moving fan to study it. Switch it off, let it stop on its own, and clear the space below. A wobble that appeared suddenly, grows with speed, or comes with clicking, scraping, a drooping part, or a shifting canopy deserves more caution than a small longstanding movement.
The safest useful check happens mostly from the floor. In my view, balance should be the last explanation tested, not the first. A weight can mask a symptom; it cannot repair a cracked blade arm or an unsuitable ceiling box.
The short answer
Switch the fan off, keep people out from beneath it, and inspect from the floor for a sagging canopy, moving downrod, damaged blade, loose light, or missing part. Identify the model and check recalls and its manual. Use a balancing kit only when the manufacturer’s instructions allow it; ceiling-box, canopy, wiring, and mounting work require qualified help.
Freeze the scene
Leave the fan off at its control and keep children, pets, and furniture traffic out from under it. Do not climb up simply to get a closer look. Photograph the whole fan from two floor-level angles and note whether the canopy sits flush, the downrod hangs vertically, the light kit tilts, or one blade appears lower or twisted.
Classify the warning
A sudden onset after a blade was struck, visible crack, loose or drooping component, shifting ceiling canopy, electrical odor, sparking, grinding, or fan that seems close to falling is a stop-use condition. Turn off the correctly identified circuit only if that can be done without guesswork, then arrange qualified service. CPSC ceiling-fan recalls document real blade and blade-arm separation hazards, so record the model and check the recall database rather than assuming every wobble is cosmetic.
Read the exact manual
Manufacturer directions are model-specific. Hunter’s general guidance says its wobble article supplements, rather than replaces, the fan’s manual, and it identifies warped, bowed, or twisted blades as parts that cannot be balanced. Compare the installed blade set, clearances, allowed cleaning method, and balancing procedure with the correct manual. Do not mix blades or hardware from another fan.
Choose between cleaning, balancing, and service
If the manual permits owner cleaning and the fan has no damage or mounting warning, cut power as directed and use stable access appropriate to the height; otherwise hire help. Clean all blades evenly. A manufacturer-approved balancing kit may be used exactly as its instructions state, with clips and weights secured as directed. Do not improvise coins, tape, screws, or weights, and do not keep running a fan while moving a test clip.
Keep ceiling work out of the owner check
Removing the canopy can expose wiring and still does not prove the electrical box is fan-rated or firmly attached to the building structure. Do not tighten hidden mounting hardware, open wiring, test conductors, or work on the ceiling box as part of this check. Ask a qualified electrician or fan installer to verify the box, bracket, downrod, fasteners, blade arms, and wiring, then document the repair and a controlled post-service test.
