Dryer runs but won’t heat? Separate airflow, power, and fuel clues

A turning drum proves the motor runs, not that the dryer has everything it needs to make heat. Identify the dryer, check only the safe external path, and leave internal electrical and gas diagnosis to qualified service.

A spinning drum is one clue, not a clean bill of health. Whirlpool notes that an electric dryer uses a two-pole supply and may keep tumbling when the heating side is interrupted. A gas model can tumble while a fuel or ignition problem prevents heat.

My view: one careful external check is useful; a string of repeated test cycles is not. Stop immediately for smoke, a burning odor, sparking, unusual cabinet heat, a damaged cord, or any sign of escaping gas.

The short answer

Confirm the cycle and dryer type, clean the lint screen, observe the accessible exhaust path, and record whether any warmth appears. An electric dryer can tumble when part of its required power supply is missing; a gas dryer adds a fuel-supply boundary. Never test live voltage, open a cabinet, probe a thermal fuse, or work on a gas connection.

Name the machine before testing it

Read the label or manual and confirm whether the dryer is gas, electric, vented, condenser, or heat pump. Check that a heated cycle is selected rather than air-only, cool, or another no-heat option. Use the model manual for any reset or test routine; do not borrow instructions from a different dryer design.

Run one short, controlled heat check

With the lint screen clean and the drum empty, use the manufacturer’s specified heated test, if the manual provides one. Whirlpool’s gas-dryer guidance, for example, uses a heated timed cycle for five minutes before checking for warmth. Stay nearby. End the test at once for odor, smoke, sparking, abnormal noise, or unusual heat.

Keep airflow in the diagnosis without duplicating a vent-cleaning job

CPSC warns that lint can block airflow, cause excessive heat, and create a fire hazard. Inspect the screen and only the visible connector without pulling the dryer far enough to strain power, gas, or exhaust connections. For a vented model, observe the exterior hood from the ground. If exhaust is weak or the duct is crushed, stop and use the site’s dryer-vent guide or qualified service; this article’s job is to separate that condition from a true no-heat symptom.

Separate electric and gas clues

For an electric dryer, note whether the dedicated breaker appears tripped and give that observation to an electrician or appliance technician. Do not remove a panel, measure voltage, or keep resetting a breaker. For a gas dryer, check only whether other gas appliances are operating normally if they can be observed without changing anything. Do not turn an unfamiliar valve, relight a burner, loosen a fitting, or troubleshoot ignition parts.

Hand off a clean symptom record

Report the model, fuel type, cycle, codes, whether the drum turns, whether any warmth develops, exterior airflow, recent electrical or utility work, and every stop warning. Ask the technician to diagnose the supply and appliance rather than replacing a guessed fuse or heater. Internal continuity tests, live-voltage work, burner service, and gas-pressure work belong to qualified professionals.
