Why is the dryer taking two cycles? Run this airflow check before adding time

Separate a load problem from a blocked vent or appliance fault with a short check, then stop for heat, odor, damaged duct, or weak exhaust.

When a familiar load suddenly needs two cycles, do not assume the heater is failing. ENERGY STAR notes that an overloaded drum can slow drying because clothes need room to tumble and hot air needs room to circulate. Restricted exhaust is a separate concern: CPSC says lint can block airflow, build excessive heat, and cause a fire in some dryers.

Start by identifying the dryer type. A conventional vented model should send moist air outdoors through a duct. A heat-pump dryer uses a closed loop and does not need an exterior dryer vent, but its filter, condenser, drain, or water tank still needs the maintenance specified in its manual. The checks are not interchangeable.

The short answer

Clean the lint screen, identify whether the dryer is vented or ventless, and run one normal load that can tumble freely. For a vented dryer, inspect the accessible transition duct while the machine is off and check the exterior hood from the ground while it runs. Do not keep adding cycles when exhaust is weak, the cabinet or room is unusually hot, or a burning or gas odor appears.

Identify the dryer and read its maintenance path

Confirm the model and whether it is a vented electric dryer, vented gas dryer, condenser dryer, or heat-pump dryer. Use the manual for filter, condenser, drain, water-tank, and exhaust instructions. Do not look for an exterior hood on a ventless model or treat a heat-pump dryer's lower-temperature cycle as proof of failure.

Run one controlled load

Clean the lint screen and inspect it for residue that blocks light or airflow. Choose a normal load of similar fabrics with room to tumble, use the appropriate automatic cycle, and record the start time, end time, dampness pattern, error code, and whether the machine stops early. Do not keep repeating the test if heat or odor changes.

Inspect the accessible connection on a vented dryer

With the dryer off and cool, look for a crushed, sharply bent, disconnected, torn, or lint-coated transition duct. Do not pull the appliance far enough to strain gas, power, or vent connections. CPSC advises replacing plastic or foil accordion-style duct with the rigid or corrugated semi-rigid metal duct specified by most manufacturers because the flexible material traps lint and crushes more easily.

Observe the exterior termination on a vented dryer

From safe ground level while the dryer runs, check whether the hood opens and exhaust air escapes. CPSC specifically recommends this operating check. Clear only accessible surface debris after shutting the dryer off; do not reach into a long duct or work at height without qualified help.

Stop for heat, odor, or protective shutdown

Turn the dryer off for a burning smell, unusually hot cabinet or laundry room, smoke, sparking, damaged cord, or recurring breaker trip. Do not keep adding cycles. If you smell gas or hear blowing or hissing, get everyone out quickly and call the gas company from a safe location, following Ready.gov's utility-emergency guidance.

Service the correct system

If drying remains slow, have a vented model's complete exhaust route and appliance inspected, or have a ventless model's filter, condenser, drainage, sensor, and appliance operation checked under its instructions. Ask for the measured finding rather than a generic duct-cleaning recommendation. A heater, sensor, blower, control, or installation fault can mimic a maintenance problem.
