Faucet keeps dripping after you turn it off? Time the drip first
A few drops from a high-arc spout can be trapped water. A drip that continues points to a valve, cartridge, washer, seat, debris, or pressure issue. The timing and faucet model decide the next step.

The useful dividing line is not whether one drop falls after the handle closes. It is whether the dripping stops. Kohler describes a temporary drip from the end of the spout that lasts a minute or two when debris or trapped water is involved, while a continuous leak points to a worn valve or cartridge.
That distinction prevents two bad fixes: replacing a cartridge for normal drainage, or ignoring a true leak because the sink is catching it. EPA says a faucet dripping once per second can waste more than 3,000 gallons in a year. Time it, map it, and repair the exact faucet rather than buying a universal assortment.
The short answer
Time how long the faucet drips, confirm whether water appears at the spout, handle, base, or below the sink, and identify the exact model before buying parts. Do not crank the handle tighter. A brief post-shutoff drip may be water draining from the spout or aerator; a continuous drip usually means the internal valve no longer seals. Repair only when both fixture shutoffs work, the manufacturer provides a matching procedure, and the faucet is an ordinary accessible model.
Time a clean shutoff
Turn the handle to its normal off position without forcing it and start a timer. Put a dry cup or light-colored bowl under the spout so individual drops are visible. Record when the last drop falls. Repeat once after cold use and, if safe, once after ordinary hot use. A short drain-down that ends is a different symptom from a steady drip that continues for 10 minutes or overnight. Do not keep tightening the handle; extra force can damage the stem, cartridge, seat, or handle.
Map every place water appears
Dry the faucet, counter, sink rim, and cabinet floor. Run an ordinary stream, shut it off, and watch the spout, handle, faucet base, spray hose, visible supply lines, and shutoff valves from a dry position. Water at the spout while off points toward the flow-control parts. Water only at the base while running may involve seals or connections instead. A wet cabinet is no longer a harmless sink drip. Close a known fixture shutoff if it operates freely and the leak is on its downstream side; use the known main shutoff or a plumber when flow continues or the local valve is unsafe.
Clean only the model-approved aerator
Kohler says dirt or debris in the aerator can contribute to a temporary drip. If the exact faucet instructions show that the aerator is homeowner-removable, protect the finish, capture the part order, and clean it by the specified method. Do not use gripping pliers on a finished surface, probe a concealed aerator with an improvised tool, or assume aerator cleaning will stop a continuous valve leak. Reinstall the parts in the original order and check both flow and leakage.
Identify the valve before buying a part
Use the brand, model number, installation sheet, receipt, or manufacturer photo-identification tool. Delta and Moen both organize repair parts by faucet family and cartridge or seat type; visually similar parts are not automatically interchangeable. For a two-handle faucet, the hot and cold sides may use different parts or orientation. Check warranty coverage before disassembly. My view: taking the faucet apart first and carrying a wet mystery cartridge to a store is backward. Find the supported part and procedure while the sink is still usable.
Set a strict DIY boundary
A basic cartridge, stem, washer, or seat repair can be reasonable when both fixture shutoffs fully stop the water, the faucet is accessible, the manufacturer publishes instructions for the exact model, and you have the specified part and tools. Confirm the water is off by opening the faucet, plug the drain, photograph each layer, protect the finish, and follow the instructions without adding sealant or lubricant the manufacturer does not specify. Stop if a shutoff leaks or passes water, a retaining nut is seized, the body twists, the valve is inside a wall, or the faucet includes unfamiliar electrical or mixing controls. Restore water slowly and watch above and below the sink through several cycles.
Check whether the drip is part of a larger leak
EPA recommends a two-hour meter check when no water is being used: record the meter, prevent all household water use, then read it again. A change probably means water is moving somewhere, but it does not prove this faucet is the only source. Call a plumber for several dripping fixtures, pressure swings, banging, recurring cartridge failure, a meter change after the faucet is repaired, or any leak inside a wall or cabinet. Save the model, timing, drip location, meter result, part used, and repair date. That record is useful if the same symptom returns.
