Freezer frosting up? Start with the door, airflow, and temperature
A snowy door edge, frost on packages, and a solid sheet on an interior panel tell different stories. Protect the food, photograph the pattern, and check closure and airflow before changing controls.

Frost is moisture made visible. Where it forms matters: feathery frost around the door points you toward closure, frost on food near a blocked vent points toward loading, and a thick repeating sheet on an interior panel deserves service notes rather than a screwdriver.
Check food temperature before you spend time cleaning. USDA says a freezer used for long-term storage should hold 0°F or below and recommends keeping an appliance thermometer inside. A control marked 'cold' cannot tell you whether the food stayed safely frozen.
The short answer
Keep the door closed while you prepare, read an appliance thermometer, and map frost at the door edge, vent, packages, ice chute, or interior panel. Remove only an item that plainly blocks closure and rearrange packages without covering visible vents. Do not chip ice, use a heater or hair dryer, remove an interior panel, touch a fan, move a heavy freezer or refrigerator, or treat thawed food as safe by appearance alone.
Photograph before brushing frost away
Open the door once, briefly. Take a wide photo and close views of the frost, gasket, visible vents, drawer positions, and anything touching the door. Record the last known normal temperature, long door opening, grocery load, power event, and first frost date. Do not scrape the surface. The original pattern is more useful to service than a clean compartment and a guessed defrost part.
Prove the door can close
Remove a package that plainly crosses the opening and reseat a user-removable bin only as the manual shows. Wipe food debris from the gasket with the manufacturer-approved method, then inspect for a folded, cracked, loose, or warped section without pulling it out. GE says a door left even slightly ajar admits warm air, while a damaged gasket can admit moisture. Frigidaire also calls out the ice-chute flap as a possible opening on dispenser models.
Give visible vents breathing room
Move packages away from the vents identified in the manual and avoid packing food against an air outlet or return. Frigidaire says blocked airflow paths can put products directly in cold air and allow frost to collect on them. Do not remove a duct cover, poke through a vent, or reach toward a fan. If frost immediately returns to a broad panel after ordinary closure and loading are corrected, photograph it and arrange service.
Measure before turning the control colder
Read a freezer-rated appliance thermometer at the location and after the stabilization period specified by the manual. USDA uses 0°F or below for long-term frozen storage. Frigidaire warns that settings below its recommended 0°F can over-freeze products and contribute to frost. My opinion: turning the control to its coldest mark is usually the wrong first move; it destroys the temperature record and may worsen the symptom without fixing a leaking door or blocked air path.
Protect food and set the service boundary
Keep the door closed and transfer food to verified cold storage if the freezer cannot maintain temperature. USDA says food that still has ice crystals or is 40°F or below may be safely refrozen, though quality can decline. Use its item-specific guidance when the history is uncertain; do not taste food to decide. Give service the model and serial number, temperatures, frost map, door and power history, photos, loading changes, and codes. Search the CPSC recall database by model before authorizing ordinary repair. Leave defrost heaters, timers, sensors, fans, wiring, refrigerant parts, panel removal, and movement of the heavy appliance to qualified service.
