Garbage disposal humming but not spinning? Switch it off now
A steady hum usually means the motor has power but the grinding plate cannot turn. Stop immediately, isolate power, and separate a possible jam from an overload that has gone silent without putting a hand in the chamber.

A humming disposal is not waiting for more time. The motor is energized while something prevents rotation, and leaving the switch on can overheat it. Switch it off immediately. Do not reach into the drain, even after the sound stops.
The next distinction is useful: a unit that hummed and then became silent may have opened its overload protector. That silence does not prove the chamber is clear or the power is safe. A disposal that never made any sound may have a supply, switch, reset, or internal fault instead.
The short answer
Turn the disposal off as soon as it hums without turning. Verify power isolation using the model manual before looking into the opening, and never put a hand in the chamber. Use only the model-approved wrench and reset procedure after the unit has cooled and the obstruction has been removed with a tool. Stop for smoke, a burning odor, a leak, damaged wiring, a repeated trip, or a disposal that hums again.
End the hum before doing anything else
Move the wall switch to Off if it is dry and safe to touch. Do not toggle it again to see whether the disposal starts. Keep water out of an actively leaking unit and keep everyone away from the switch. If there is smoke, sparking, a burning odor, unusual heat, or water near electrical parts, stay clear and call qualified help.
Verify the exact power-isolation method
Find the model number and owner’s manual. Whirlpool says to disconnect power before clearing a jam, either by unplugging the disposer or switching off its circuit breaker. A wall switch in the Off position is not enough protection against accidental operation. Do not handle a wet plug, open wiring, remove an electrical cover, or guess which breaker serves the unit. If you cannot positively isolate it by the manual's method, stop.
Look, but never put a hand inside
After verified isolation, use a flashlight from above. Whirlpool specifically says never to put a hand in the disposer chamber and recommends tongs or pliers for a visible object. Remove only an object you can grasp safely from the opening without forcing a tool deeper. Broken glass, a hidden object, standing water, or anything wrapped around internal parts is a service call, not a reason to feel around.
Use a wrench only when the manual approves it
Some models have a center hex socket on the bottom. If the model manual identifies one and specifies a disposal or hex wrench, insert the correct tool with power still isolated and work it gently back and forth. Whirlpool notes that resistance may give way as the jam frees. Do not use a broom handle, pry against internal parts, force the wrench, crawl under an unstable sink setup, or apply power with the wrench installed.
Reset once, in the right order
Let an overheated unit cool for the period stated in its manual. With power still isolated and the chamber confirmed clear, press the model's reset button only as directed, then remove every tool before restoring power. Whirlpool places the reset after power-down and obstruction checks. Run cold water and make one brief test from a safe position. My view: a second hum is the answer. Turn it off and arrange service rather than repeating resets until the motor fails. Give the technician the model, sound sequence, object found, reset result, leaks, odors, and any tripped device. Check the CPSC recall database by model before paying for an ordinary repair.
