Oven not heating? Check the controls before you test it again
Identify gas or electric first, then read the mode, lock, delay, door, and display from outside the closed oven. Gas odor, a carbon-monoxide alarm, electrical damage, or a repeated fault ends the check immediately.

An oven that does not heat is not one problem. An electric oven can have a supply, control, sensor, or element fault. A gas oven may still need electricity for its controls and igniter, and fuel or ignition work is not a homeowner test.
Before changing settings, photograph the display. Write down the mode, temperature, time, lock icon, delayed-start indicator, code, and whether the door is fully closed. One clean record beats five rounds of button pressing.
The short answer
Confirm the fuel type, selected mode, set temperature, control lock, delayed-start setting, clock, door closure, and displayed code. Observe one normal preheat from behind the closed door only if there is no gas odor, carbon-monoxide alarm, smoke, electrical damage, or repeated trip. Do not open panels, touch elements or igniters, manually light gas, work on a gas connection, perform live electrical tests, or use the oven as space heat.
Clear the gas and electrical stop signs
If you smell gas or hear hissing, do not operate the oven, switches, plugs, breakers, lights, or a phone inside. Get everyone out and call emergency services or the gas utility from a safe location. For a carbon-monoxide alarm or possible symptoms, CPSC says to get outside to fresh air immediately and call 911. Smoke, sparking, a scorched receptacle, damaged cord, or a breaker that trips again also ends the check. Do not reset and retry.
Identify the appliance before troubleshooting it
Read the model plate from its normal accessible location and check the manual for fuel type and controls. Do not pull a range away from the wall to find a label. Whirlpool notes that a gas oven that does not heat can involve something as simple as a tripped breaker or a more involved igniter fault. Electric models can have element faults. Neither observation gives permission to remove a panel, test voltage, inspect a gas line, or touch an internal part.
Read every setting as a possible explanation
Confirm Bake rather than a warming, proofing, cleaning, or broil mode. Check the set temperature, clock, Control Lock, Delay Start, Cook Time, Demo mode, Sabbath mode, and any app or remote setting named in the manual. Cancel a delayed or timed program only through the normal control instructions. Record an error code before clearing it. A blank display on an otherwise dead appliance is an electrical-service clue, not an invitation to open the console.
Check the door without defeating it
With the oven cool, look for a rack, pan, foil, liner, or debris that plainly prevents the door from closing. Inspect the visible gasket without pulling, reseating, or removing it. Whirlpool says the door must close and the seal must remain in place for the oven to retain heat. If the door is locked, misaligned, damaged, or refuses normal closure, stop. Never bypass a latch or run a heating cycle with the door held shut by hand.
Observe one preheat through the closed door
Only when no hazard sign exists, set one ordinary Bake preheat as the manual directs. Keep the door closed and watch the display and window. Note fan sounds, clicks, code changes, and whether preheat advances. Do not touch an element, igniter, sensor, vent, or interior surface, and do not manually ignite a gas oven. Stop if heat never begins, a code returns, or the appliance trips power. My opinion: repeated preheats are bad evidence. They erase the first control state and can keep stressing a failed part. Give qualified service the model, fuel type, display photo, settings, door condition, observations, code, and prior power event. Never use an improvised heater or any oven to heat the room.
