Oven turns on but won’t heat? Split the clues before service
A lit display does not prove the heating system is working. Identify the oven, record what Bake and Broil actually do, and keep high-voltage, ignition, and gas work out of the homeowner check.

An oven can show the time, accept a temperature, and still stay cold. That narrows nothing by itself. Electric and gas ovens create heat differently, while some ranges use one energy source for the cooktop and another for the oven.
My view: the useful homeowner job ends once the symptom is specific enough for the correct service call. Pulling the range out or opening a panel to chase a guessed element or igniter adds shock, fire, tip-over, and gas risks without proving the diagnosis.
The short answer
Confirm the model and energy source, read the displayed mode and code, and make only the external observations allowed by the exact manual. Stop for gas odor, smoke, sparking, a glowing or damaged component, abnormal heat, or a repeated breaker trip. Cabinet panels, live-voltage tests, heating elements, igniters, gas valves, and control boards belong to qualified service.
Name the appliance before applying advice
Photograph the rating label without moving a heavy appliance or reaching into a hot or energized area. Confirm whether the oven itself is gas or electric; do not infer that from the cooktop. Search the manufacturer’s support site for the exact manual, and search the CPSC recall database using the model and serial information. A recall instruction overrides a generic troubleshooting article.
Read the control state before running another cycle
Check the selected mode, set temperature, clock, delay-start status, control lock, Sabbath or demonstration mode, and any error code against the exact manual. These features differ by model. Do not use a reset sequence copied from another brand, and do not repeatedly cycle power to erase a code before recording it.
Make one controlled, external observation
If the manual permits a normal empty-oven check and there is no warning sign, remove stored pans and combustible items, close the door, select the specified Bake setting, stay in the kitchen, and record what the display, fan, sound, and temperature indication do. If the manual provides a separate Broil check, note whether its behavior differs. Do not touch a heating surface, defeat a door switch, or stare close to a gas burner opening.
Treat fuel and electrical clues as boundaries
For a gas oven, leave immediately and call the gas utility from a safe location if gas is smelled or heard. Do not relight, turn an unfamiliar valve, move the range, or test an igniter. For an electric oven, a display that works while heat does not can still involve the appliance supply or an internal fault. Do not measure voltage, remove a cover, or repeatedly reset a breaker. A second trip ends the experiment.
Give service a symptom record, not a parts guess
Report the model, energy source, modes tested, codes, whether any heat appeared, fan and sound behavior, recent outage or electrical work, and every stop warning. Ask the technician to separate supply, controls, sensors, heating components, and installation before quoting a repair. If a fire starts, leave, call emergency services, and never use water on an electrical or grease fire.
