Refrigerator leaking water underneath? Start with timing and location
Contain the puddle, protect cold food, and connect the leak to dispenser use, a filter change, ice making, or a defrost cycle before anyone moves the refrigerator or opens a panel.

A puddle under a refrigerator is a location clue, not a diagnosis. Water found at the front after using the dispenser points in a different direction from water at the rear that keeps growing while nobody uses water, or a sheet of ice and periodic runoff inside the freezer.
Contain the water first. Put down towels without reaching under the cabinet, keep people off the slippery floor, and move nearby cords or small appliances only if they are dry and safe to handle. If water has reached a receptacle, plug, cord, power strip, or damaged electrical part, stay clear and call for qualified help.
The short answer
Dry the walking surface, keep water away from electrical equipment, record where and when it appears, and check only the filter, dispenser area, cabinet interior, and water shutoff that the exact manual identifies as user-accessible. Do not pull out a heavy refrigerator, remove panels, reach into the machine space, or work on a pressurized water line.
Record the first dry-to-wet change
Photograph the puddle, dry only the reachable floor, and note which edge becomes wet first. Write down the last dispenser use, ice production, filter change, cleaning, power interruption, or door-left-open event. A sheet of paper towel placed on the dry floor in front of the appliance can show a new drip, but do not slide material underneath or leave it where it blocks ventilation.
Check the food temperature before chasing the leak
Read an appliance thermometer without holding the door open. If cooling is uncertain, keep the doors closed and start a time-and-temperature record. Transfer perishables to another refrigerator or an ice-filled cooler when that can be done safely. Do not taste food to judge safety. USDA guidance uses 40°F as the refrigerator limit and two hours above that temperature as the discard point for perishable food.
Inspect only model-approved external points
Find the full model and serial number without moving the unit, then open the exact manufacturer manual. Look at the dispenser tray, visible filter area, door seals, cabinet floor, and user-removable bins if the manual directs those checks. Whirlpool notes that an incorrectly seated or incompatible filter can leak, and that water behind the refrigerator may involve the supply connection. Those clues do not make a hidden fitting homeowner work.
Use timing to separate the likely paths
A drip tied to dispensing or a recent filter change supports checking those user-accessible areas. Water collecting inside and later reaching the front can fit a defrost-drain path, but drain location and access vary by model. Continuous water or a rear-edge puddle raises concern about the supply side. Close a known, dry, freely operating refrigerator shutoff only if you can reach it without moving the appliance; never force a corroded valve.
Call with a map, not a guessed part
Give service the model, temperature record, first wet location, timing, photos, filter part number and change date, dispenser and ice-maker use, and whether closing an accessible shutoff stopped the water. My opinion: moving a loaded refrigerator to confirm a theory is a poor trade. Its weight can injure someone or damage the floor, cord, tubing, and shutoff before the original leak is found. Search the CPSC recall database by model and serial number, and follow any recall remedy over generic advice.

- Use an appliance thermometer and keep the doors closed. USDA says a refrigerator should hold food at 40°F or below; perishable food held above 40°F for more than two hours should be discarded.
- Stop
- Fast or continuous flow, water near electricity, burning odor, smoke, sparking, unusual heat, a damaged cord, a tripped protective device, or a refrigerator that is no longer staying cold.
