Refrigerator warm, freezer cold? Protect food first
Measure both compartments before guessing at a part. A blocked air path, loading problem, door seal, frost pattern, fan, control, or broader cooling fault can create the same complaint.

Food safety gets the first decision. A package that feels cool and a freezer item that remains hard do not reveal the warmest shelf temperature or how long the fresh-food compartment has been above its target. USDA recommends an appliance thermometer and a refrigerator temperature of 40°F or below.
A cold freezer beside a warm refrigerator often points toward air movement between compartments, but not always. Both sections may be warming at different speeds. Measure before rearranging controls, throwing out a guessed part, or opening equipment.
The short answer
Use appliance thermometers to confirm whether the refrigerator is holding 40°F or below and the freezer is near 0°F. Move perishable food to verified cold storage when needed, keep doors closed, record temperatures and visible conditions, and leave fans, panels, controls, and refrigerant work to qualified service.
Measure both compartments
Place appliance thermometers where the manual recommends and record refrigerator and freezer temperatures, control settings, room temperature, time, and recent door or power events. Check more than one refrigerator shelf if the complaint is local. Do not rely solely on a control display or touch.
Protect perishable food
Move meat, poultry, seafood, milk, eggs, leftovers, and other high-risk food to a working refrigerator or an ice-filled cooler if safe temperature cannot be maintained. USDA says food held above 40°F for more than two hours should not be consumed. When the time or temperature history is unknown, use official food-safety guidance and do not taste food to decide.
Check doors, loading, and visible vents
Keep doors closed as much as possible. Look for packaging that blocks visible vents, a drawer or shelf installed incorrectly, an item preventing closure, a torn or dirty gasket, or frost around an air path. Follow the manual before changing control settings, and allow the specified stabilization time after any approved adjustment.
Record sound and frost without opening panels
Note whether fans or the compressor run, click, stop, or sound different, and photograph accessible frost, condensation, error codes, and the door seal. Do not remove an interior panel, chip ice with a sharp tool, touch a fan, test live wiring, or open a refrigerant system. Unusual heat, smoke, arcing, or a burning odor requires immediate safe shutdown and service.
Give service a temperature timeline
Provide the model and serial number, measured temperatures, control settings, room conditions, food load, door events, frost pattern, sounds, codes, power history, and prior repair. Ask the technician to explain whether the finding concerns airflow, defrost, a damper, fan, sensor, control, door, installation clearance, compressor, or sealed system rather than replacing a part from the symptom alone.
