Smart lock battery dead? Use the model’s backup path without forcing the door
Identify the exact lock, use only its documented key or emergency-power method, protect account access, and investigate binding before blaming the electronics.

Smart locks fail in two places that feel identical from outside: the electronics have no power, or the bolt is binding so badly that the motor cannot complete its cycle. The response starts with access, then separates power from door fit.
Keep manufacturer instructions and a mechanical backup outside the locked home. A manual stored only behind the door is not a lockout plan.
The short answer
A dead keypad does not authorize prying, drilling, or applying a random battery. Find the exact model's documented physical-key or emergency-power method, use a locksmith when that path is unavailable, and replace the complete battery set with the specified type from inside. If fresh batteries drain quickly or the motor strains, check door and bolt alignment before replacing the lock.
Use emergency help when access cannot wait
Call emergency services for a life-safety situation. Otherwise use a licensed locksmith or building manager when no verified backup method is available. Do not pry the escutcheon, drill the lock, climb to another opening, or copy a generic internet power trick.
Find the exact manufacturer procedure
Use the model number, purchase record, app device page, or manufacturer photo guide. Some locks have a physical key; some provide exterior emergency contacts for a specific battery; others require a different procedure. Apply only the method and battery orientation documented for that model.
Replace the complete set from the secure side
Once inside, follow the manual for cover removal, battery chemistry, quantity, polarity, and calibration. Replace all cells as one matched set. Do not mix old and new batteries or chemistries, and stop for leakage, corrosion, swelling, heat, or damaged contacts.
Test the bolt with the door open
Run several lock and unlock cycles with the door open, then close the door gently and compare. Smooth operation open but strain or failure closed points to alignment, weatherstripping pressure, hinges, or the strike rather than a dead radio. Do not force the motor against a binding bolt.
Restore app and household access carefully
Confirm codes, authorized users, auto-lock, notifications, time, and hub or Wi-Fi connection. Remove access for former occupants and enable MFA on the owner account where offered. Do not delete the lock or wipe codes merely because the batteries died.
Investigate fast drain with a record
Record battery brand and type, replacement date, daily cycles, weather exposure, jam events, firmware, signal quality, and hub distance. Contact the manufacturer or a locksmith when drain recurs, the motor grinds, the housing is wet, or calibration fails. My opinion: a lock that eats batteries is reporting a condition; calendar reminders alone do not fix it.
