Washer not draining? Map the water path before opening anything
A stopped cycle, unbalanced load, excess suds, kinked hose, standpipe backup, user-serviceable filter, pump, lock, or control fault can leave water in the tub.

A washer full of water creates two problems at once: the appliance did not complete its sequence, and opening the wrong access can put that water on the floor. Front-load and top-load designs handle emergency draining, locks, filters, and hose placement differently. The model manual is the boundary.
Do not force a locked door, tip a full machine, reach under it while connected, or open a pump filter without a controlled drain plan. Water near a receptacle, cord, extension connection, or damaged wiring is an electrical hazard, not a cleanup chore.
The short answer
Pause the machine, record the code and water level, keep the door closed when water could spill, and check the visible hose and household drain. Use the exact manual before any emergency drain or filter service. Stop for leakage, wet electrical parts, burning odor, or a drain that backs up into the room.
Name the symptom
Record whether the tub is full or partly full, whether the washer stopped before spin, the displayed code, load type, detergent amount, sounds, and recent installation or movement. A machine that drained but left wet clothes has a different problem from one holding water. Use the manual's cancel or drain routine once if conditions are safe.
Keep the water contained
Leave a front-load door closed while water is above the opening. Shut off supply valves only if they are accessible, dry, and turn normally; do not force corroded valves. If active water is escaping, protect people and electricity first and call for help. Do not drag a heavy full washer away from the wall.
Inspect the visible drain route
With the machine off, look for a kinked, crushed, frozen, leaking, or dislodged drain hose and check whether the standpipe or laundry sink is backing up. Hose insertion depth, standpipe height, and the required air gap are model-specific. A household drain overflow needs plumbing service even when the appliance pump runs.
Use the manual for filter or emergency drain service
Some front-load washers provide an emergency hose and pump filter behind a user access door; others do not. Follow the exact instructions, use shallow containers and towels, drain in stages, and wear gloves for sharp objects. Never remove a lower panel, touch internal wiring, or open a filter while the machine is energized or water cannot be contained.
Test once, then hand off the evidence
After an approved external correction, run one drain or spin test while watching the hose and standpipe. Stop for a recurring code, hum without water movement, leak, burning smell, unusual heat, or protective-device trip. Give service the model, code, water level, load, suds, hose route, drain behavior, sounds, and everything already checked.
