Water heater leaking from the bottom? Trace the water before blaming the tank

A puddle at the base can come from above, a drain valve, a relief discharge, condensation, or the tank itself. Shut down the damage safely, then document the path without opening or repairing the heater.

A puddle under a water heater does not prove the bottom of the tank failed. Water from a top connection, relief discharge, or drain valve can run down the jacket and collect at the lowest point. Condensation can also leave temporary moisture. The first useful job is damage control, not a part diagnosis.

Do not keep the heater running to see whether the puddle grows. A.O. Smith tells owners to turn off the power or gas and the cold-water supply before inspecting a leak. The exact controls differ by fuel and model, so use the label and manual rather than a generic internet sequence.

The short answer

Treat active water at a water heater as urgent. Keep away from wet electrical equipment, turn off energy and incoming water only by the model's instructions and only when the controls are safely reachable, then photograph where moisture first appears. Never cap, plug, or alter a temperature-and-pressure relief discharge. A leak from the tank jacket or bottom seam usually means replacement, while water that ran down from a connection may be repairable.

Protect people and stop adding heat

Keep children and pets out of the area. Do not touch a wet heater, plug, disconnect, breaker panel, gas control, or nearby appliance. If you smell gas or hear hissing, leave without operating switches and call the gas utility or emergency services from outside. For an electric heater, switch off its known dedicated breaker only when the panel and your path are dry and safe. For gas equipment, follow the manufacturer's emergency shutdown directions only if the control is accessible and you know how to use it; otherwise leave it alone and call qualified help. Never extinguish a burner or manipulate gas piping as a test.

Limit incoming water only if the valve is familiar

A known, dry, freely operating cold-water inlet valve can limit an active leak when it is safely reachable. Follow the heater manual and do not climb, lean across hot piping, or force a corroded valve. If the local valve will not move, the leak is fast, or water blocks the route, use the home's known main shutoff only when that route is also safe. Call the utility, plumber, or emergency service if neither can be reached without entering a hazardous area. Do not drain the tank as an improvised response; hot water, pressure, hoses, and floor drains add new risks.

Dry the reachable floor and find the first return

After energy and water are controlled, remove standing water from a safe edge and take a wide photo of the installation. Dry only the exterior surfaces and floor you can reach without touching controls, venting, wiring, or hot piping. Then watch where moisture returns first. Water beginning at a top fitting can travel down the jacket. A drip at the drain valve may stay localized near the bottom. Water emerging from the jacket seam or beneath the outer shell is stronger evidence of an internal tank failure. Do not remove an access panel, insulation, burner cover, or drain-pan connection to improve the view.

Treat the relief discharge as a safety signal

Find the temperature-and-pressure relief discharge pipe from a distance and note whether water is coming from its open end. The relief valve is a safety device, not an ordinary faucet. Do not cap, plug, clamp, reduce, or redirect the pipe, and do not operate the test lever during an active leak investigation. A.O. Smith lists excessive temperature or pressure among reasons for relief-valve leakage. The valve, expansion control, house pressure, thermostat, and installation need qualified evaluation rather than a tighter cap.

Separate brief condensation from a continuing leak

A.O. Smith notes that temporary condensation can occur when cold water enters a tank, including when a gas burner fires after inactivity. That possibility should not be used to dismiss a growing puddle. Record whether the tank was recently refilled, hot water was used heavily, the room is humid, and moisture forms as a light film or from one distinct point. If water returns after the unit is shut down, continues to pool, shows rust staining, or cannot be traced without opening the equipment, keep it off and arrange service. My view: a dry floor that stays dry is evidence; calling a puddle condensation because the tank is old is not.

Make the repair-or-replace call from the source

Give the plumber or authorized service provider the model, fuel, age if known, photos, first wet point, leak rate, shutdown steps, relief-pipe condition, and any recent work. A.O. Smith says loose connections and a faulty drain valve may be repairable, while a cracked or corroded tank generally requires replacement. Ask the technician to identify the failed component and write whether the tank itself is sound. Check the manufacturer warranty and the CPSC recall database before authorizing work. Leave the heater off until the leak and safe restart are resolved.
