How to tell whether a bathroom exhaust fan is doing its job
A fan should move shower moisture out of the room. Use a safe, repeatable check to spot weak airflow, bad timing, or a duct problem.

Bathrooms create a concentrated burst of moisture. An exhaust fan is meant to carry that moisture outdoors, but a dirty grille, obstructed duct, closed damper, undersized equipment, or a duct that ends inside the building can leave the room damp even when the fan sounds busy.
This is a homeowner observation check, not permission to open wiring or climb into an attic. Start with the room after an ordinary shower, the fan manual, and visible clues. Persistent wet finishes or an unknown duct termination warrant a qualified HVAC, ventilation, or building professional.
The short answer
A fan that makes noise is not necessarily ventilating. Look for a repeat pattern of lingering condensation, damp finishes, or weak airflow, then correct the cause instead of masking the moisture.
Run a normal-use check
During a typical shower, run the fan as intended by its manual. Afterward, note condensation and whether it clears with the door closed. Do not use a loose tissue test near a moving fan as proof of airflow.
Check the basic controls
Confirm the switch, timer, humidity control, and any wall control operate predictably. A timer can help the fan continue after bathing, but set it according to the equipment instructions and household needs.
Inspect accessible exterior evidence
From ground level, look for the exterior termination and a functioning damper when the fan runs. Do not climb ladders, remove exterior covers, or enter a roof area simply to inspect it.
Reduce moisture at the source
Wipe standing water, hang towels to dry, repair drips, and keep the fan running for the post-shower period its instructions recommend. A dehumidifier does not correct a duct that dumps moisture into the building.
Get the duct and capacity evaluated
If moisture returns despite ordinary use, ask a qualified professional to assess airflow, duct routing, termination, backdraft damper, and appropriate capacity. Share photos and your timing notes.
Use a three-shower comparison
Record three ordinary showers on different days: fan setting, door position, visible condensation, and time until surfaces are dry. A repeat pattern gives a contractor better evidence than one unusually humid day.

- Confirm the fan vents outdoors
- Moisture should leave the building. A duct that terminates in an attic, crawlspace, soffit cavity, or ceiling can create hidden moisture damage even if the bathroom feels better.
- Use the right escalation
- A fan that is unusually loud, trips power, has no perceptible airflow, leaks water, or accompanies mold, persistent odor, or damaged finishes needs investigation beyond a cleaning.
